Pre-Episode 7 Project Update

47 posts in this topic

Greetings, backers!

First, let's just get this out of the way: This update doesn't contain a new documentary episode. In the last update, we mentioned that there would be a break after Episode 7 to account for Amnesia Fortnight, our annual internal game prototype project. Since then, we decided that rather than sticking to that rather lopsided schedule, we would put out an intermediate update first, include Episode 7 in the following update, and have less total downtime overall. Look forward to Episode 7 in December.

To make up for it, there are a few other Reds-related goodies this time! But first up, an explanation of that Amnesia Fortnight thing.

AMNESIA FORTNIGHT BEGINS

So, what is Amnesia Fortnight anyway? Every year, everyone at Double Fine forgets what they're working on for two weeks and divides up into teams to bring new game ideas to life as functioning prototypes. It's the process that resulted in many of the games we've made over the past few years, including Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade, Once Upon a Monster, and Middle Manager of Justice.

Usually, Tim picks the ideas that get prototyped. This year, we're trying something different: our fans vote for the ideas they like best, and those will be the ones that get prototyped! And not only that, you get to download the original prototypes for Costume Quest and Happy Song (which became Once Upon a Monster), as well as Brazen, a never-before-seen, never-before-played prototype led by Brad Muir during last year's Amnesia Fortnight.

Once the prototype process starts, we'll do livestreamed video every day, and 2 Player Productions will be recording plenty of footage for their series of daily Amnesia Fortnight video releases. So if you're jonesing hard for more DF/2PP action, this is just the ticket!

PLUS, you get to download the brand new prototypes that result from this year's event! And you get to pay whatever amount you want! It's all very exciting and also terrifying. But the Double Fine Adventure project has taught us that it can actually be a pretty good idea to trust the crowd when it comes to this sort of thing.

REDS PRODUCTION UPDATE

From producer Greg Rice:

As we near the end of the year I wanted to take a second to fill everyone in with where things currently are with the project! In short, there has been a TON of amazing work done in the past 8 months.

For this game we’re working on a brand new engine so a lot of programming time has been spent building really solid tools and systems that will provide content creators with the streamlined workflows they need to build a truly amazing game. And that’s just what they’ve been doing!

The Maiden’s Feast and Cloud Colony areas you’ve likely heard referenced in the documentary videos are playable in game on almost all of our supported platforms. These areas have beautiful multi-layered parallaxing backgrounds and contain numerous puzzles. We have hundreds of animations and cutscene layouts hooked up. We have over a dozen characters in game. We have over 500 lines of dialog for them written by Tim with scratch dialog recorded by members of the team hooked up in game. And we have rich ambient sounds and music playing in game.

Honestly, things are really shaping up!

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. When development ramps back up next year we’ll hit the ground running and really be able to crank out a ton of awesome stuff for you to enjoy. In fact, we’ve already started with concepts and layouts for the boy’s spaceship and those areas will move into full on production as soon as we get back from the holidays!

It really has been an amazing year and now that we’re in full on content creation mode I can’t wait to watch as the entire game really starts to take shape.

2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS TALKS ADVENTURE

Even though the tireless trio at 2 Player Productions spends countless hours behind the camera documenting our development process, we never actually hear all that much straight from them. So Chris Remo cornered them in a dark alley and made them squeal. Wow, that sounds really sinister. It's actually just a podcast. With fun stories and jokes! And murder. Okay, no murder.

CONCEPT ART ROUNDUP

Who doesn't like concept art? Enjoy this bevy of beautiful brilliance, courtesy of Reds artists Nathan "Bagel" Stapley, Peter Chan, Levi Ryken, and Scott Campbell. Enough said, just soak it in!

REDS WALLPAPERS

Backers asked, so here you go! Desktop wallpapers of Bagel's original Double Fine Adventure 2-Headed Baby artwork, and the Lumberjack farmhouse scene.

NEW STORE AND LUMBERJACK PRINT

We recently redesigned the Double Fine Action Shop from the ground up! You may already know this, because you may have helped us test it! A week before the new shop went live, we posted to the forums, inviting backers to a private testing phase that was instrumental in helping us quash some final bugs and smooth out some usability concerns. Thanks, backers!

The store is now open to the public! http://shop.doublefine.com/

And it launched with a new item, the Double Fine Adventure Lumberjack Print! Featuring everyone's favorite...well, you know. The Lumberjack print was originally available only in person at conventions. It's our first attempt at an art print, and feedback has been great so far. We hope you agree!

Please note Double Fine will be closed from November 22 to November 25 for Thanksgiving. So go ahead and place orders, but be warned that we'll be a bit delayed.

Finally, because many backers weren't able to get in on the testing discount in time, we've set up a new 10% discount code for backers that works through November 28. Just enter "lumberjackery" (no quotes) when prompted during checkout.

SLACKER BACKERS

If you have friends who want to get in on the game updates and documentary, point them over to our Slacker Backer form. Everyone should have a chance at adventure!

And, as always, there are a few ways to easily keep up with these forum update:

- Subscribe to the backer RSS feed: http://www.doublefine.com/dfa/dfarss/

- Subscribe to the Table of Contents thread on the forums: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/6794/

Okay, that's it for now! The next update will include Episode 7 of the documentary, so sit tight!

I think I mentioned this before, but you should really display the actual price on the Double Fine Slacker Backer page. Some potential backers surely get scared away when there is no price on display on the site itself.

EDIT: Oh, and the Humble Bundle Amnesia Night thing was brilliant. I loved that video...

(I slightly fear Tim will quit his company to pursue an acting career.)

The podcast was great, thanks guys. For some reason I'm dying to see the moment where Chris Remo innocently pokes his head in on a tense meeting! Can someone remind me which video update that was in and approximately where it appears?

I THINK it was the very end of episode 5. I'm not able to double-check right now though, sorry!

Chris, quick question - I've been looking everywhere but nobody seems to know. Any idea where the group picture from the PAX after-party at the Hard Rock Cafe can be found? The DF team and all the backers present rounded up for an awesome group pic, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

Good question--I'm actually not sure. Was it the 2PP guys who took it? I can ask them.

I *believe* the folks at 2PP took it - sadly I don't recognize their faces quite like I do the rest of the Reds team, but I'm fairly sure it was them.

Not urgent or anything of course, but I'd certainly appreciate you asking! :)

Listening to the podcast... I knew 2PP was a small company, but what I didn't know is that is just the three guys that are working on this documentary... That's insane. It makes me admire your work even more.

PS: I feel dumb now, as I did not know this earlier.

PPS: Chris, I don't know where to tell you this, so here it goes: I loved Thirty Flights of Loving, that includes your soundtrack. :)

Thanks, I appreciate it! I'd been a big fan of Brendon Chung for years, so it was an honor to be able to work with him. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Being a backer has made me think in new weird entitled-asshole kind of ways. Amnesia Fortnight is awesome, and sharing it with the fans is an inspired move, but... I caught myself thinking "This is going to delay work on the DFA for two weeks! What the hell! Get back to work on 'my project'!" This new found power of being a high-flying "international games investor" has really gone to my head! ;-)

I did get over it in about ten seconds, and then the blazing audacity of this whole Amnesia Fortnight alpha preview program really impressed me. It shows such devotion to the "sausage factory tour" philosophy, and at the same time a certain amount of belief in the team's creative moxy, combined with putting faith in the selective decisions of a really engaged community. Who else would do this?

Shine on, Double Finers.

I was wondering the same but they said it would be released this month, after an intermediate update. So I guess the question really is: where is the intermediate update?

Minecraft Doc is finished (they said in a live stream) and likely releasing shortly, I assume after that gets dealt with ep7 will be released.

I may be wrong but I remember reading, during the stream of AF, 2pp saying that episode 7 would be released in january after the holidays.

I noted the same thing. It seems like most of the studio is chillin' until January.

Think its good that now they got 2 weeks doing something else, then some off time over xmas, to then return renewed to the Double Fine adventure :)

Sounds like 2PP just killed themselves during AF, working just as hard as the devs, clocking a lot of time, not clocking an awful lot of sleep.

They rocked Amnesia Fortnight pretty damn well. If they weren't taking it easy for a spell, I'd ask them to. I love the videos, but I would also love for them to remain happy and alive so that they can keep making more of them.
