DF Game Club Survey (End of 2013 Edition)

Recommended Posts

Oh man! You should add Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People to the list! That game is pure joy! :P

One of Telltale Games' definitive best.

Regarding the talk about doing something short after we're done with BoUT, it could be nice to do Serena. It's a game that in a sense started as a tutorial for the game engine behind upcoming game Asylum, since the engine is going to be open source. The game itself didn't take shape until after the whole debacle with Paul Trowe's outing of Serena Nelson, and is sort of a gesture to her from Augustín Cordes and a large number of people wanting to do something nice for her, including Josh Mandel. It's a very short game that can easily be finished in a single session and it has a pretty interesting way to tell a story.

Discworld 2 and ToonStruck are both pretty high on my list of games I could stream for the game club.

I would love to see those. I never played either and they're not so easy to come by these days.

I was just looking at The Shivah, one of the games that was added to the recent PC and Android Humble Bundle, and was thinking that it might be a game worth doing down the road. Average gameplay length seems to be around 3-4 hours, and the story looks interesting. I'm definitely going to play it at some point since it looks really interesting, so I'll let you guys know what I think of it when I do. Until then, has anyone played it before? If so what did you think of it?

Here's a link to it on steam for those wanting to learn more about it:

Seems like I'd missed some post announcements!

I'm a big fan of SBCG4AP, but I feel like that's starting something new when we've still got so many loose ends flailing around.

Serena sounds amazing! I hadn't heard of it before (or if I had, I hadn't realised what it was). Flesk, would you be interested in streaming at all?

Syd, do you think we'd want to do Discworld 1 before doing the second game? IIRC, they have continuity between them.

The Shivah wouldn't be a bad one to do. The current Humble PC/Android bundle also contains Broken Sword 2, and Mim said she might be interested in revisiting that.

Lots of options!

+1 for Toonstruck. Reading the story that explains why even gog hasn't gotten a release of the game yet is sad. There's a petition for the full version and sequel of the game to be release here that everyone who cares about good adventure games should sign: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/toonstrucktwo

Also does anyone know where you can buy the game legally besides buying the physical discs?

It would also be a good opportunity to get Josh Mandel back since he does most of the voice acting. I'm interested for sure, but it's more a question of opportunity, since game club happens after my wife goes to bed and my daughter often wakes up during the streams. It will probably be easier once she's a little older.

I think there's either a problem with the petition or it doesn't work with non-US zip codes. Either way I've tried to sign it on a few occasions, both with my real zip code, an empty field and leading zeroes, but I only get a database error as a result.

AdventureGamers.com is a good source to find retailers, both digital and physical, for adventure games in my experience. They even list other outlets when they sell the game digitally in their own store. The only listing they have for Toonstruck is for the physical copy on Amazon.com, so I think that copies of the original retail version is probably your only option.

So we just got a pretty important reason to play one of the Humongous entertainment games as soon as we're finished BOUT: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/13786/

After we finish BOUT I'd really love to celebrate this fantastic news by streaming Freddi Fish 1 (either the updated version or the original via SCUMMVM;whichever is easier/better for streaming purposes.) We could also play Spy Fox 1 or another of Humongous' games depending on which one of their games people would prefer to see a stream of. Still I want to know what do you guys think about the idea?

I'm still thinking we should try to wrap up more of the unfinished series that we've got going before we start new ones. PJ Sam 4 is meant to be released on Steam at the end of the month according to the press release. Does that sound exciting at all?

For reasons that would require more explaining than I have time for before I go to bed, PJ4 is my least favourite game of the series. I'm still up for doing it, but be aware that it isn't as good as the others in the series are imo.

Hoi. I'm just dropping by to suggest The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav and its sequel, Memoria, from Daedalic Entertainment. If you play the first, you will want to play the second pretty much right away. They are some of my favourite adventure games of recent years. Pacing, plot, puzzles, music, and art (once you get used to it) is superb. They are both fairly long but if knowing the puzzles beforehand, I suppose they can be played through quicker. I know we're not nearly through the whole list of games yet but maybe these can be considered for future GC sessions. :)

Oh yeah, and I don't know if The Longest Journey and Dreamfall have been mentioned or are being considered. Those are another two massive games, though.

With KR0 Act III released, I think now might be a good time to get that out of the way. I'm up for streaming that once we're done with Spy Fox unless anybody is keen to do something else.

Could look towards moving ahead with the next S&M episode soon as well. I haven't had any luck getting guests confirmed for that, so we may as well push ahead. It'd be really nice to finish up Season 1.

I picked up "The Inner World," a point and clickish adventure game, in a sale recently. I've only played it for maybe two hours or so, but it seems like something you game club people might enjoy.

P.s. Kentucky Route Zero is on Humble Bundle for $12.49, consider picking it up if you haven't.

Smiles

Alrighty, we're done with Sam & Max S01E04. Had two great sessions with Dave Grossman and others :D

I'm going to stream The Fall next, and Permafry is talking about wanting to do the next episode of The Raven after that.

The Inner World looks interesting. Anybody else played it? Anybody keen on streaming it?

Hey all,

As you might know, the next 3 weeks, we will be playing and discussing The Raven Episode 2. I'll be streaming the episode just like the last episode.

Afterwards. the next 2 weeks are being decided on, so any suggestions are appreciated.

The main reason why I'm posting though is just a heads up that I'll be taking a vacation to Florida. My family and I will be seeing both disney world and universal orlando studios, mostly for the new harry potter parks there since my family is all major fans of harry potter. This means I'll be gone during the streams going on during the 16th and 23rd of august, so I won't be able to stream anything until after I get back.

For that reason, we'll obviously want to plan for someone other than me to be streaming during those days. So when we make plans for what we are streaming during those days, it should be something I usually won't be streaming on (for instance, the humongous games). Any suggestions for games for us to do are greatly appreciated =D

The Journey Down: Chapter Two is supposed to be coming out soon, so it would be nice to do that. It probably won't be out in time to fill the slot after The Raven though.

I've suggested Serena before and I think it would be neat to do because it's got some mechanics that are a bit unusual for a point and click adventure. The descriptions you get when clicking on things in the environment adapts to your progression through the game and I think that's a great way to make the space of that single room it takes place in feel more rich. It's only a one session game though.

Drawn: The Painted Tower might also be nice. It's a sort of a point and click/hidden object game hybrid that's developed by masters of HOG shovel ware publishing Big Fish Games. I found it a lot more interesting gameplay wise than other HOGs though, but the story isn't all that interesting, it's the first of a trilogy and it's Windows exclusive. I'm suggesting it because it might be interesting to do a game that isn't strictly point and click.

ToonStruck is pretty high on my list of games to stream next, and I'm considering streaming that after The Raven.

It'd probably be a 3-week stream but I'd have to play through it again to get a good feel for how long it'd take.

I've never played that but I've heard so many good things about it, so I'd love to watch it.

I loooove Toonstruck!

You'd probably be wise to note the necessary conversation options so you can stick to only them, as the convos are so long-winded. Plus make sure you're well-practised at tile puzzles so you can get the black hole for fast-teleport without taking too much time!

It might also be very good timing to play through Toonstruck, as there's apparently going to be a Toonstruck-related announcement at Comic Con by the developer that holds the rights, possibly regarding a re-release.

Ooh, nice! That does seem to be specifically regarding a re-release, yeah. Doesn't affect me now that ScummVM can get it working from my original discs, but it'd be nice for a new audience to find it.

Darn! Why am I not getting email notifications from this thread anymore >_<

As I hope everybody's

, TJD2 has a release date of the 25th of August. I've been testing a beta version and it's heaps longer than the first one (well worth picking up if you want to pre-order and support their charity drive).

Flesk, I don't suppose you'd be interested in streaming either of the titles you mentioned? :D

So far as schedule goes, I'm starting to feel like maybe it'd be worth considering squeezing in Stacking after Toonstruck if Lee is available.

Act 1 of The Maker's Eden is also being released soon (I can definitely pull some devs for that).

https://www.humblebundle.com/flash?humongous

$20 for every Humongous Entertainment that has been released onto steam so far, and includes completely drm free copies of the games as well! Get it asap since it will be ending in less than a day!

We'll definitely be playing more of these games in the future, so if you want to get them for dirt cheap, now is probably the best time you'll have!

So, with Twitch being acquired by Google and them wanting to remove brand overlap, it seems that we're going to lose all of our Game Club archives unless we throw them onto YouTube.

"On August 27, we will begin removing past broadcasts from Twitch servers."

This poses two problems: 1) increased administrative overhead - do we want to maintain a YouTube account in addition to what we already do? 2) will YouTube work well for us given all the automated takedown notices and copyright trolling that seems to go on - I've been told that enough claims (false or otherwise) will cause problems.

The only alternative I can think of is switching our streams to Hitbox.tv. While Hitbox seems superior to Twitch in a number of ways, the low stream delay probably being the most notable, it's also still kinda rough around the edges in other ways and it's hard to predict what direction the service is going to go in the future since it's still fairly new.

Cheeseness: I would say the DFGC VODs are pretty boring anyway. With only gameplay and no commentary or anything, and the game being played at a pretty calm pace, they are generally not good to watch. It's the live chat while watching them that makes them interesting.

Syd: The real problem is that the only video livestreaming and archive sites/services that are cost efficient are pretty much Twitch and Youtube and porn (What? There's a filter for *pee oh are enn* ? That's a little overdoing it, I think!) sites. Especially for the livestreaming side, all competitors seem to be pretty much dodgy as businesses go.

Syd: Hitbox feels like it might be a good match, but I agree - it's feels a little uncertain at the moment.

liorean: We have people who view the archives, and there's the "past sessions viewer" tool that lets people watch back video and chat at the same time.

I'm open to the idea of dropping archives or changing services, but we do need to be sure that we communicate those changes well.
