Backer Beta Coming TOMORROW!

Recommended Posts

Well folks, tomorrow is the day. Within 24 short hours, Act 1 of Broken Age will be in your sweet sweet hands. It’s been a complete honor to get to make this game in this way. In true game development fashion, it’s been a long and difficult process, but your relentless faith and enthusiasm has made every moment a real pleasure.

All of us at Double Fine know it’s only because of you that this game exists, and we cannot wait to hand it over.

So tomorrow, you’ll receive a Humble Bundle link to a page that will contain your PC/Mac/Linux Steam code and, if you backed at the appropriate level, the soundtrack download. As additional digital backer rewards are released—including the DRM-free build, HD documentary downloads, documentary soundtrack, and digital art book—those will be added to your Humble page, if they were included in your backer tier. Documentary downloads will arrive around the Act 1 release date, with spoiler blurs removed.

If you already have a Humble account, you will be able to add this page to your library for easy tracking in the future. If you don’t, making a Humble account is easy! Just go right here: https://www.humblebundle.com/signup

When Act 2 is released, there will be a DRM-free version of the full game available on Humble, but Act 1 requires Steam to download. If you don’t have Steam, you can install it here: http://store.steampowered.com/about/ Once it’s installed, add the game by launching Steam, clicking “Add a Game” in the lower left, selecting “Activate a Product on Steam…” and entering your Steam code when prompted.

A quick note about the documentary: All episodes starting with Episode 15 will assume full knowledge of Broken Age Act 1. Keep that in mind if you’re waiting to play until Act 2 arrives!

Bug reporting

We’ve done our best to provide you guys with the cleanest and most stable build possible. We want you to have the BEST experience loading this up on day one. We’re really proud of what we’re shipping tomorrow and think you’ll be really pleased. That being said, the nature of software development is there are always going to be some that slip through the cracks! That’s where you come in!

We definitely want to hear about any issues you come across, so we went ahead and set up this fancy new bug tracking sub-forum (http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewforum/60/)! It’s already pre-filled with notes on what kind of information will be helpful to us in re-creating the issue so we can get it fixed, so take a look at that before posting.

As for what to keep an eye out for, we definitely want to hear about any crashes ASAP. The cause for these will most likely be compatibility issues. We only have so many machines in the office, and while we did work with an external service for compatibility testing, everyone’s setup is a bit different. So the most important thing with any crash is to include your hardware specs.

The other thing that would be great to look for is localization bugs. We were able to get French, Italian, German, and Spanish translations in for Act 1, but it was pretty much the very last thing to go in. We’re in the middle of localization testing right now and are also leveraging bilingual Double Finers, but this amount of eyeballs will be truly helpful. We’ve created a sticky post specifically for this, so let us know about any misspellings, missing characters, or lines that are being cut off! Danke!

Marketing/PR Update

Right now we’re working on a press release that will go out tomorrow morning. This will announce the public ship date of the game and a new trailer showing off Vella, the female protagonist! Here it is for you to see a bit early, but please refrain from sharing it until tomorrow!

[vimeo]84089662[/vimeo]

We’re also preparing to send out review codes to press, who will be under review embargo until January 27. This embargo also applies to any of you backers who are in the press or have blogs—we are requiring all formal reviews be held until January 27 at 10am Pacific time (6pm GMT). The same time limit applies to the press as to backers; everyone is in the same boat! We’re trying to be as fair as possible given that backers will have access to the game before everyone else.

We’re also planning on cutting together a montage of backer reactions to Broken Age Act 1, so if you’d like to participate in that, feel free to upload video of yourself speaking about the game to YouTube, and link it in this thread: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/11642/ Don’t get spoilery though!

For our part, we’ll be doing interviews and video appearances the week of the 20th to try and get the word out about the game, and are working on another launch trailer for the public ship date!

A Note On Spoilers

As you know, backers are getting access to Broken Age Act 1 before anyone else, so we request that you be sensitive to spoilers when discussing the game and releasing Let’s Plays and similar game footage.

To that end, we are requesting that any videos you release of the game be cut off after the Sugar Bunting Maiden’s Feast in Vella’s world and upon meeting Marek in Shay’s world. (We don’t consider identifying these parts to be spoilers; you’ll know what we mean when you reach these points in the game.)

And to reiterate a previous point, episodes of the documentary from episode 15 on will assume the viewer has already played Act 1, and will be less cautious with story spoilers. If you wish to wait until Act 2 has been released to play the game, go for it—but we believe we’re shipping a complete and enjoyable game in Act 1, and we would encourage most players to just dig in!

Launch Plan

You may recall that at one point Broken Age was planned for release under the Steam Early Access program. This is no longer the case. For various logistical reasons, and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a “Season Pass” granting access to Act 2 once it is complete. Anyone who has Act 1—either by being a backer, or by buying the game separately—will receive Act 2 as a free update when it’s ready.

This is something that will also be covered in the press release tomorrow, so please refrain from spreading the news now so all details can be shared together.

Get Ready

For almost two years we’ve been working really hard on Broken Age, and you are the reason why. We’re really excited that backers will be getting the game before anyone else, because we’re grateful not just for the extra help tracking down bugs tomorrow, but for the many months of support, feedback, concern, and excitement we’ve gotten from our amazing backer community. Everyone here at Double Fine can’t wait to hear what you think!

So let us hear from you, and THANKS FOR BACKING!!!

Holy smokes, that trailer gave me major chills!

Question, is the Backer Beta tomorrow going to be Mac compatible? I seem to remember that the Beta was going to be PC-only.

Haven't been around here, in a while.

What is the status of iOS? It's kind of crazy how desperate I am to play this game, juxtaposed with how I will never install a game on a PC, ever again.

Fantastic! I can't believe how good this game looks, and I can't wait to see if it plays equally well ;)

I'm sure you realize, but I'd also like to point out that I would really appreciate a DRM free build of Act 1 without having to wait for all of the game :) I don't have Steam, and I am not a fan, so it would be cool if I could get to play the game DRM free when Act 1 is released to the world.

Looking forward to getting my hands on it :)

That trailer sent me into anticipation overdrive. This seems to be much more than I was expecting for a mere 'act 1'.

"Oh my, a fresh face rises from below!"

Super, I've waited all day for this news and was sort of squealing when I saw the update in my mailbox ;). Trailer is awesome! Now to wait for the rest... (*reminder to self: not so long now*)

Great! About the Spanish localisation, at least myself will be playing in English first and then Spanish, just to help you guys out. When would be a reasonable time for localisation bug detection so you can actually correct any possible mistakes?

Just to make absolutely sure before I get myself into trouble tomorrow, does "any videos" include streaming on Twitch so long as things do not go past the points listed?

Very excited to play it either way! Glad it's finally here!

HYPE! ARG!

Apologies if I've missed the answer somewhere, but will the soundtrack be available for sale by itself?

Also I planned on a creepy reaction comic instead of a video. not exactly photogenic :P.

EDIT: just watched the trailer! GAAAH SO GOOD! To be honest I had a little bit of doubt about Vella's VO but that no longer applies! Super stoked!

I'm interested in this too, missed out on getting it, and now I've heard bits in the documentary I NEED it.

Guys, twitter is a little confused by this embargo business, perhaps you could clarify before it becomes more bad PR. I don't think it's well understood that the release tomorrow is not the official release of the game, it's a final closed beta before the release to public soon, and that's why you're asking for no reviews before. People are like 'huh, why are they embargoing a game that is releasing tomorrow' and I can sort of understand why that'd be confusing to a casual observer.

I can't believe that nobody celebrated the first footage of the hipster lumberjack in-game cameo. Yay!
