Revenge of the Sunfish is a game that is hard to describe. It's like if you mixed warioware, MSpaint, and a sheet of blotter acid pureed together.

This is more or less unbroken footage of gameplay in the sequel game, mind you.

Here's a video of someone playing the original.

I'm feeling really nostalgic...

Shenmue, best game ever made, it's weird how most games can still not match it.

The zen it had, everything, it's like games are just not as good.

It was so fucking organic it was (is) out of every game out there.

The game made you feel nostalgic, angry, meditative... So damn good.

I saw Cox & Crendor do a video on Cho Aniki 2, and they did one on the first game a while back. That game series is Japanese-weird. (Japan has a whole different kind of weird from everybody else in the world.)

Speaking of inspiration, don't forget to go see The Wind Rises; it's playing at the Landmark in Embarcadero Center until this Friday. Wonderful, wonderful film.

edit: Whoops, didn't notice that you guys had already gone to see it-- sorry!

Wow, Frog Fractions was amazing!

OK, so you know the game Hotline Miami? One of the two guys who made that game has made a ton of small, super weird games. His website is Cactusquid.com. You can download the two Cactus Arcade bundles which I think include most of the games on the site.

I recommend:

hotthrottle.png

Hot Throttle

It's like RC Pro Am except it's a bunch of naked dudes pretending to be cars.

seizuredome.png

It's a twin-stick style shooter like Geometry Wars except it's a sumo wrestling ring and you shoot wrestlers with guns

psychosomnium.png

It's a clever platformer/puzzle game. Can't say too much without spoiling it.

(I can't post the screenshot for this one because the f-bomb is in the URL...)

F--k Space!

This game isn't that great, but it has the best description:

You were on your honeymoon trip with your hot new wife, when a meteor struck her dead. Enraged by sorrow you turn your car into a space ship and venture into space to get revenge on everything you can find.

My favorite turn-based RPG for the PS2 was Okage Shadow King.

In case you've never played this early PS2 gem: It starts off with you and your sister going to the circus. She gets attacked by a ghost and comes down with a curse that only allows her to speak in pig latin. Your dad performs a ritual whereby your shadow is possessed by the evil king Stan in return for him removing the curse. You have to go around and eliminate a bunch of fake evil kings who have stolen Stan's powers so he can get them back.

Jonas Kyratzes' games are super weird also: http://landsofdream.net/games/

I'm particularly fond of the bizarre Lands of Dream games.

I suggest starting with The Book of Living Magic, specifically the Newgrounds version (believe it or not, it's the least obnoxious from an "free flash game portal" advertising perspective). The game is short, endearing, not particularly difficult, and a good small introduction to their style of game :)
