Bloodline Editor functionality feedback thread!

Recommended Posts

I'd have liked more layers. I think 8 would have been enough. 5 is too few in my opinion.

More layers would have been nice, but the trouble with all of this -- is that with such a custom thing, it is unlikely the perfect tool was ever going to be made. But I've been pretty impressed with 60-70% of the bloodlines ideas people have been kicking around for the last while, and the fact is that if I encounter some sigils and designs that I don't think are particularly stellar in-game, I'm sort of okay with that, since they were made and chosen by someone, and I can build a bit of story in my head about it all, and have fun.

It's not easy for someone to afford the kind of stuff you require, especially in a kickstarter. Perhaps the Kickstarter's vague description of the sigils is partly responsible for this?
Afford? The coat of arms were simplistic and easy to reproduce over and over again. I mean, look it can even naturally fit the general design of some of the things already there:

scottish-lion-rampant-black-white-sleeve-baseball-t-shirt_design.png

Their reason for not doing this is based on aesthetic design, not cost.

Unfortunately, not many people in America typically have or have a copy of their coat-of-arms. I don't understand why people would give up their history like that. Perhaps its part of the Americanization of immigrants (see: The Joy Luck Club, for example). But because of this, there is very limited demand for the type of iconography you're asking for.
Type in your last name into google and then add the words "coat of arms" at the end. Congratulations, you now have a family history and coat of arms with the site likely trying to sell you a print of it.
I know it's upsetting to you, but the fact that you have a history of lineage and a coat-of-arms puts you a great deal ahead of most people, in terms of your personal identity.
There's actually a huge demand for coat of arms. Entire companies dedicated to creating them and otherwise describing personal history.

The request was for the basic traditional profile of animals. Like lions in a rampart position which is the most common. A lion, gryphon, and maybe one or two others. There are countless of uncopywritten examples that can be gleaned for so it wouldn't have been difficult.

The fact that I've run a basic google search and found my lineage shouldn't somehow diminish my vote for such a feature. However, let's face it, the editor is out and we're not going to get a chance to resubmit. So it's not going to happen.

So, I've got my bloodline designed and ready to go.

I have a question that will impact the names of the founding members. Do I have the opportunity to name subsequent offspring of the founders?

How is it going to work? Do we start with the two founding members mentioned and then subsequent names are randomized. Are they husband/wife or something else like one of the other threads indicated (siblings)?

Messing around with the editor has made me realize how uncreative I really am, lol. I seriously want to just have a simple rhino head and nothing else.

I hope that people submit these too! Stark simplicity can be super rad. Just check Cory Schmitz's stuff! He's super minimalist and awesome, and he designed our initial logo for the Kickstarter. :D!

LastWindow, I agree with Brad. While I'm still playing around with goofy stuff like a moray eel and Brad's Drink from the last Teamstream, I'm trying to tone it down with a simpler look. Basic designs have a strength and presence all their own.

- Like, why'd it take me this long to realize we have both bees and a hexagon?

- Chequy border

- Maybe not the best idea for a banner

Hey dudes I edited a couple of posts to use the SHARE link (you can get it at the bottom left by hitting the plus sign)

Those private links (the ones with the random words... like 'hexagon-sausage-cow-apple') will give anyone access to edit your bloodline. Be careful with those! :D!

Here's my sigil so far.

I tried using an apostrophe in my motto "let's" but it would not work. Whenever I tried out the share link, it would just load the some weird defaults, but not the stuff I entered. Removing the ' apostrophe from the motto fixed it.

I also tried the ’ character that Anthony posted in the FAQ, but that's not working either. In this case, the share link just comes up with no text for any of the fields and no sigil.

Is there any way to make use of an apostrophe? Since the number of chars on the motto is rather restricted, I wouldn't be able to fit the long version "let us".

Has anyone figured out how to make a boar head yet? I was hoping to make one close to my family's coat of arms, but I am not very artistic! :P
Oddly enough, my (real life) family's crest is a boar against a green background... and the crest of my mom's maiden name is a boar against a red background. Turns out people weren't super creative with these things to begin with.

Anyway, the best result I've gotten is to just take the rhino and stick alchemist weapons on either side of the snout to get the tusks. It looks a little more mouse-like than I'd like, but it largely works. That's only 3 layers, so you've got 2 left to play with if you're okay with a rhino horn on there. If not, you can spend the last 2 layers throwing squares on top to blot it out.

A boar on a green background? You're not my long lost family are you? Because that's my mother's side of the family's coat of arms!

Here's my boar, based on a suggestion from earlier in the thread. Still working on maybe adding some more http://bit.ly/1kAEYVh

The link does not properly save in IE 9 at least.

Switched to firefox where it now successfully saves.

Any update on how the names are going to be reflected in the original house in game? Are they going to be siblings/married and will there be any opporunities to name the offspring or is that purely random?

Just playing around with the creator. Not quite sold on this design because it is a bit busy, but I like the overall thing I have going. Any thoughts?

http://bit.ly/1jXQhAT

I think if you got rid of the crossbows and moved the bird down, then it would be really interesting. I like the X shape that you've got going, but the crossbows really don't add anything to the theme.

Mmm, it kind of has a bird through a window skylight theme without the crossbows, which is cool.

Been playing around the the bloodline editor for a while. I'd love more of everything: more colors, more layers, more sigil options, more traditional heraldry options, but there's still a LOT you can do with what we've got.

probably not what I'm going to use so feel free to use or modify. I was going for an illuminati/freemason/occult feel with this one. started with the eye in the pyramid from the back of the dollar and went kinda occult from there. could be good for an alchemist house

http://bit.ly/1kLipx8

an earlier illuminati-esque concept: http://bit.ly/1mZgxh6 it needed something more and I think the punched up streaky background of the new one does it.

I still want an eye in the pyramid with beams coming out concentrically, like the coat of arms of braslaw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braslaw

here's some early pattern experimentation. tried to make an argyle sweater-ish pattern: http://bit.ly/1mZbOfy

more early patterns: a gator on diamonds: http://bit.ly/1mZcNwc

and probably closest to what I'm eventually going to use: 2 hands and 2 fists: http://bit.ly/1mZeIB5

there's a lot of potential sources for inspiration here:

I think this is what I am gonna go with now. Keeps the "bird and window theme" and is much cleaner. http://bit.ly/1q6QcQs

I just wanted to confirm that the apostrophe character does, in fact, cause issues with the share links. Here's my working link.

My original motto used "can't" instead of "cannot." The other non-standard characters "ñ" and "é" load just fine.

A couple of questions regarding the future of the bloodline editor.

Will there be more shapes? (my votes would be for a rose (reasonable) and an iguana or similar lizard (unreasonable, but hey!)).

Perhaps more importantly, will it be possible to 1) mod the available shapes in my local copy of the game. 2) make those shapes

available to other people (note: not the bloodlines, just the shapes used in the editor).

okay, I admit that 1) is really begins with "convince my friend to "... But the answer to the question will be the same.

Have approvals for submitted bloodlines started going out yet? I did mine during the stream when they first sent the emails and still sitting at "pending" on my bloodline url.

It's been really cool seeing what everyone else has been making! Here's mine: http://bit.ly/1n1oDWy

Favourite pattern so far.

You can type XY coords into the editor at the bottom right!

Yes, but it can't be set always as intended. For example instead of 55.9 (from .85 to .99) you get 55.85 (or from .81 to .84 you get .8 etc) no matter what. This and asymmetrical symbols could made some unintentional imperfections, as can be seen here:

Soo I'm wondering, has there been a link sent out for the $100+ backers to add the bloodline to the game ? I either didn't receive that email or I'm too early xD

You should have received an email (they were sent out a week ago during the anniversary stream). Check spam folders and contact DF if you can't find it.

No doubt!! The flag of Japan is one of the most perfect examples ever of iconic, minimalist design. Look at famous modern logos, too!

Sometimes LESS IS MORE. ...It's harder to remember a design you can't define or understand. But minimalism may demand a measure of discipline/perfection that can be especially challenging. If it's off even a little, it shows, and the effect can be spoiled. And as we're using pre-made symbols (like stamps) going uber-simple, like using nothing apart from one, centered circle, may appear (and feel) lazy/unsatisfying.

It's a balancing game for me--finding the happy medium of 'iconic and elegant' somewhere between 'uninspired bare bones' and 'train wreck labyrinth.'

I do take my sigil making pretty seriously, but I only get one, so I think it's appropriate to want to get it right and make one that's crisp and memorable. I want it to look unlike any other, but I hope that others will like it and welcome it in the world they seek to build.

BTW, I hope the bloodline editor/sigil maker will be left online and active even after the submissions close. I'm really having fun playing with it... I mean, er, practicing with sigils apart from the one that is my own which I wish to formally submit.

I made a Psychonauts themed sigil/bloodline earlier today! http://tinyurl.com/n3936zk =-D

I'm not using this one so if anyone is less creative than me...y'know, have at it.

I tried to make one like that just to see how it was done and came up with these. Couldn't quite get one like it, though. (That said, I do like my blue and white one.)
