      These Forums are closing!   10/04/2019

After more than a decade of serving this community well, these forums have finally run their course and it's time to close them down. That doesn't mean we want to close the doors on our community, quite the opposite!
Our discord server grows ever busier by the day, and we encourage all Double Fine fans to meet us over there www.discord.gg/doublefine In a short time these forums will become a read only archive and will remain that way until they become needed again.
You never know, it might happen.  There is... a prophecy. Thank you all for being part of these forums, and remember that the fun is definitely not over - so please join us on Discord! Love ya, Spaff, Tim, Info Cow, and all of Double Fine.

DF Game Club: Maniac Mansion (with special guests inc. Ron Gilbert!)

Recommended Posts

DOUBLE FINE GAME CLUB: Maniac Mansion (starting 6th of December)

The Double Fine Game Club is a community run weekly event where interested gamers play through and come together to discuss what they do and don't like about a particular game (sort of like a book club, but for games). We usually aim to play one or two hours a week, and we normally have somebody streaming the current game so that those who don't have the game or don't feel like playing it again can still feel involved.

Discussion takes place here in the forums and on the Double Fine Game Club home page. Game Club is a very informal weekly chat, and everyone is welcome!

Previous game: Jazzpunk

Next Game: A Vampyre Story

For anybody who's not aware, Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick (the creators of Maniac Mansion) have teamed up again to create a new game in Maniac Mansion's style called Thimbleweed Park. Their Kickstarter campaign is live at the moment and has already reached its funding goal.

We just got confirmation that Ron will be joining us (hopefully Gary too, but we're not sure on that). Exciting! :D

Nope, but it does involve another game.

Are these things archived? I'm not going to be able to attend this today but was interesting in watching it at some point.

I don't think we're planning to do an audio interview with Ron this time around, so he'll probably just be in the IRC, which we should have a log of when it ends.

Nope, but it does involve another game.

I asked them if they had played The Cat Lady. That game has a massive reference to Maniac Mansion in that the whole first floor and then some of the mansion is recreated in it. I didn't think to grab screenshots until yesterday, but I've captured and stitched together three rooms from the game:

I will get to the rest eventually and upload it in a library on Imgur (as per Fhqwhgads' suggestion) for convenience.

Gary didn't comment on my question but Ron said he hadn't, that it's creepy looking and that he's going to have to play the game.

I'm probably going to have to play it too since i love the art style and trailers of it even if the level design seems to take heavily from Maniac Mansion.

That mansion is only a small part of the game.

All the better then =D

Yeah, I second that. I was a bit hesitant to play it at first because the horror adventures I've played in the past have been super stressful, but The Cat Lady is nothing like that. It has a creepy atmosphere throughout, but the horror is more of an emotional kind (if that makes sense) and it has a masterfully executed story.

I just got word from David Fox (who was primarily a programmer on Maniac Mansion, working with SCUMM scripts to create the game we know and love) that he's planning to join us for our final session this weekend :D

That's great. :) I'm looking forward to it.

I finally got around to grabbing and stitching together screenshots of the reference to Maniac Mansion in The Cat Lady that I've been talking about, and I've uploaded them all to an album on Imgur. There's also a basement with a couple of rooms that might be the equivalents to the dungeon and boiler room in Maniac Mansion, but they look very different and are full of blood and gore, so I left them out.

Do note though, that the last image of the album, which is the equivalent of the garage area in Maniac Mansion, also contains some blood and gore, so skip that one if you don't care for gross, pixelated stuff.

Next week, we'll be making a start on A Vampyre Story and will be joined by Gene Mecsy (plus others if all goes well).

In the meantime, what did people think of Maniac Mansion?
