Thank you, but it needs a sequel! :)

Recommended Posts

I'm playing through it now, and as much as I'm over the moon that Grim Fandango is finally playable again without community mods (which I truly appreciate in the time between 1998 and now), the game needs to look fresh on every level. It's not possible to do this with the original game due to time, money, assets etc (or maybe it is? I don't know), so I personally think we need a sequel. It would be an insult to toy with the original game anyway, a touching up and being able to be played on current generation systems was all it needed.

Perhaps not a direct sequel, but something in the same universe, with the same art style because it is mindblowingly gorgeous and there is nothing else around like it. Nothing. Grim Fandango has stood the test of time with it's look and feel and Tim & every person who worked on this game, back then and now, should be truly proud.

The only reason I bring this up is because I've just seen the cutscene where we pick up Meche, and the pixellating on the cutscene itself was heartbreaking, especially when it moves into the scene with Meche sitting at Manny's desk with the new textures and lighting on her.

I would absolutely love to see another game, in this style, in full 16:9, 1080, beautifully rendered on current generation systems.

Thank you for bringing the dead back to life Double Fine, Sony, and everyone else involved.

I'll get back to the game, you get on with drawing up a sequel yeah? Cool.

Totally agree! I think any sequel would have to be told from another perspective perhaps a traveling story with another method of travel (ship train car being the main ones shown as packages) we got a wonderful slice of storytelling with Manny but it'd interesting following another individuals journey through the land of the dead

yes i would love to see the number 9 from the inside ^^

I remember Sam and Max, the Devils Toybox, Episode II ... with the train.

It was an astonishing awesome episode to play, this whole train part of it! ^^

And yes, Rubacarva is so awesome, maybe even a prequel would be interesting? Or maybe really something where you could return to Mannys Casino? ^^

But i guess this whole "corruption" story was very interesting. Crime in the land of the dead was awesome. So i guess you need a guy who is just a little bit a bad guy. So the trip won't be really with the ship or with the train by nature ^^ ... i loved the story that manny must have done something really wrong, for beeing a Grim. A good guy who could afford a car ... i don't know. But maybe someone in the DoD that steals a car or something would be awesome ^^ maybe even a retro 50ties car? ^^ An escape story would be nice. The guy in Rubacarva who worked for the police and looked after the sprouted was awesome too ... the whole botanic topic. Maybe a police character, a police station and ur guy who have to get out of the jail would be quite interesting! Or what would be a nice thing for a next episode ^^ maybe a Grim ... just another Grim ... and maybe a story of someone who became a Grim. How he became a Grim. That is one interesting part. Maybe even more (playable! xD) stuff in the land of the living, as i loved the 50ties messed up style of it! I am ALLWAYS every single time i play that game, sad i can't run around in the land of the living cause it looks like totally awesome ^^

Another Grim? another Story? Maybe Manny as a guest? Some old friends? A burning air-ship? ^^

Maybe more about involved Cat-Runs. Maybe a playable Cat Run? Maybe someone more from the inside?

Oh and i have a great thought right now! What about a double agent for Salvador? :D So you have it all like more on the inside view of the bad guys, maybe also a reason why you are in the number 9 at first ^^

It could be playing in the same time as grim fandango. We maybe could meet manny IN his Casino? ^^ Manny could save us from prison or something. Yhea, i guess there interesting ways for another story in the land of the dead! ^^

But this whole love story and lost soul thing of grim fandango of course is hard to top and great in the first place. I don't really mind the old graphics. Thats just the way things where! And it couldn't look better now ( just watched a first playthrough ^^)

But yes, gameplay wise it would be awesome, a options for a Sequel! And yes the style and the narrative is still kinda unreached even, as the story, the look, and the world itself (yhea, really getting sprout is one of the GREATEST things ever about that world! And how botanics become really gloomy that way. There for i totally LOVE the finale and the botanic guy in the canalization. ) is kinda really unique. But that art deco in computer games is a thing, has also been proven in bioshock. Even as i don't know if i would ever play it, as i think it's to dark and i don't like the ego-shooter thing. ^^ But i found bioshock for it's art style also interesting.

So a full 3d super hot game from double fine, playing in the land of the dead would be really interesting! I am also thinking about maybe influences from between brütal legend and the cave, 3d graphic wise.

Like outside the city it could be more like open terretory, but inside a city it could be more guieded like in the cave ... or especially more like it allready was in grim anyway ^^

I think the game is perfect and not to spoil too much, has an excellent ending that doesn't really need any elaboration.

I'm not averse to another 3D adventure game though.

I've finished it plenty of times :)

yhea, the ending is great!

I guess it's more about: That world is so well imagined, and has so much possibilities, a new game just in that world but not especially the same story, would make sense.

It is really a unique world and really no other game could take you there, as long as it is no official grim fandango franchise.

And modern technoligies are also very interesting ... like a high graphic grim fandango II with maybe even less point and click and more like something like tomb raider or myst or brütal legend ... a kinda mixture of those with the adventure genre. As Grim fandango was allready kinda ment to be. But like a new story in now a day 3d graphics.

Well, it's just a thought, but it makes me quite excited ^^

Of course a good story would have to come first. But than again ... the land of the dead and the fact that it is a detective story, leaves much room for creativity, new stories and new games ;D

I couldn't agree more. I don't think there's something more to develop in the storyline. "Nobody knows what's gonna happen at the end of the line"... And nobody needs to know. It's a perfect ending. Maybe a philosofical one too. I'm afraid a sequel would spoil it.

I've tossed the's ideas around over the years, and they are always going to be on my dream list. Idea one which would be the easiest way to go. Would be to just do a new story in that world, where you play as a traveler who has to find out why they died and why they got this crap walking deal that they ended up with. The next is truly just a wishful idea. Combines three games I love. Maniac mansion DotT, Grim, and Monkey island. Primary story will be kicked off with Bernard and Green Tentacle being warped by Ed in to the world's of Manny and Guybrush. They would basically trade places with Glottis and Guybrush. Tentacle would be with Manny during his first time as a reaper and would be mistaken as his new demon driver, and Bernard gets swapped with guybrush (doesn't really matter when but I always thought the idea of Bernard filling in for guybrush during MI2 would be cool. All the characters would have to work together and help solve some situations in their newly placed world's while guybrush and Glottis have to work with Ed to fix what happened.

Dreaming hard I know, but still.

@geekario:

haha it sounds unlikely to happen, but i think the second idea sounds really great xD

In general: Well. Mannys story has been Mannys story. It was the full 4 years. So there isn't much room for more.

But someone elses story, someone elses 4 years walk of the dead ... uh baby ^^ maybe in the same time grim fandango played, really. So Manny could even have a reapearance in his casino.

Ooohh, ok I like that. And what if the Department of the dead isn't there anymore or maybe not doing anymore of the travel work after Manny leaves to start his adventure. So your main character just gets plopped into this world and has no clue/guidance as to where he is or what to do. But after talking to some characters learns a little bit about the DoD and where they must go. And yeah maybe you get to the casino during its early stages and Manny is just some shadowy figure up in his tower that might not be interacted with but you can see him up there and that could be enough of a reference. I also think it could be cool to explore more of the land of the living. Like maybe your character gets to go back and haunt the living to uncover your death. That could be cool.

You're thinking direct sequel.

I'm thinking expanded universe. Many stories could potentially be contained within it.

Yeah. For me the only way this would ever work is a completely new story. Different time, mostly different locations, stay as far away from the original's plot as possible.

Kiiiiinda interested in a prequel. Manny before he was dead (and finding out why he had a debt to pay). It'd be totally different art and setting of course, but it wouldn't interfere with the story we have (apart from maybe giving us a different appreciation of Manny).

Don't need it of course, just throwing it out there.

I'd LOVE an "expanded universe" sequel...

Cannot be sure, but I think Tim would love to write it too!

Now the problem is... would it be possible with Disney still owing the rights?

The re-release was one thing, but this is a totally different ballpark I guess :'(

Didn't they made the cave with sega?

Disney isn't Lucas Arts. And thats the good thing. Disney have games of their own, but really, they don't have that much franchises in the gaming industry really, or do they?

Beside Star Wars of course now. But in it's cartoony way, Grim Fandango fits really better to Disney.

Even as Disney kinda is quite open for new creative directions at the moment anyway.

Or as Tim Burton became more of a thing for them recently.

And Grim Fandango is a Detective Story. But it is never too brutal or unsuiteable for the younger ones. Again, hello Disney.

And Double fine proofed with stuff like Brütal Legend and the Cave and stuff that they are capable for really high graphic games.

So even Disney would know that a Grim Fandango Sequel will sell more when Tim Schäffer is involved.

The only question in the room will be the money. And that's a topic that could be talked about!

Especially as A LOT of people want a super highgraphic, dated, 2015 Grim Fandango game!

If you read some comments, even like in the steam forums, people got that idea of such a Grim Game. And WANT IT. ^^

And it seems like they would have more likley loved it, some of them, if it had been. I feel like there is a market for that!

Why shouldn't disney? ^^

And it's Humor, it's fantastic world, the well written characters. It all fits to disney. It's morbid theme again fits to the new directions disney have taken.

So it is still only a dream. But not an impossible one ^^

+ the day of the dead was very "in" and visualy there the last 2 years. ;)

With the flowered skulls and stuff. It's even a trend right now if you will.

A Grim Sequel could profit from that right now ^^
