Original trailer

While the gameplay seems pretty much the same, several aesthetics have changed, and it looks like it would have had a darker feel. Discuss.

I don't really like any of the Psychonauts trailers, none of them convey how awesome the game is... I've often considered making a Fan Trailer.

I think they got the right amount of darkness in the final game. Maybe this trailer was just meant to have a creepy mood? Though I've never seen it for myself, wasn't the marketing the game finally got meant to be kind of bad since they were making it out like the target audience was children?

Additional: Boyd's eyes just... stand out more. His face looks so different in the 3 seconds we see him for... also the eye asymmetry has been reversed and increased.

That'sprobably what they where going for. Microsoft was going to publish Psychonauts just as it looked in the trailer/beta and was going to be released back in 2003, but later Double Fine wanted the game to be more humorous and a bit more light-hearted than what Microsoft wanted. Because of that, Microsoft refused to publish the game. I think they where afraid that since Double Fine changed the game's mood, it would flop.

You're also right; even though Double Fine made the final version of Psychonauts more funny than scary, they still got the right amount of darkness. I did noticed that Boyd's eyes where different, and some of the characters, to me at least, looked slightly different. Aside from that, I also noticed that in the video around 0:16, the sign says "Whispering Pines" instead of Whispering Rock. I'm now wondering if they've made any changes through out the story when they where still creating the game before they actually released it, or just kept the whole "run-away-from-the-circus-to-join-a-summer-camp" thing.
