75% of us have so far voted for 'Super private' but is that realistic, enforceable or fair?

Recommended Posts

My vote in the original privacy poll* has placed me in the minority. I understand the desire to pull up the drawbridge but we've already got exclusive access to the backer forums and the videos. How much more exclusivity do we need?

I'm not very keen on lording it over those who missed the opportunity to back this project, especially if they're already a member of the DF action forums who may have only missed out due to a lack of credit card or bad timing money-wise (even with an amount like $15/£10, it does happen). And with regards to media leaks, what tangible effect would they have on development? This isn't a new stealth bomber being made. If anything, a more open development would allow DF to capitalise on the publicity they have already garnered for themselves through Kickstarter. Das ist gut, ya?

EDIT: To clarify, yes, I mean this poll: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/6081/

I dont think we need to keep it that super private, I dont even think we can, but just let us have the secrets for as log as possible. No need to be overly leeky.. hmm. that came out wrong. eeh..

anyway. There were only two options in the poll so

What there's a secret handshake? It didn't say that as a reward on kickstarter. But yeah private as possible. As in DON'T TELL/SHOW ANYONE!

Where's the option for "I'll leave this question to professionals who actually know how NDAs work"? Because that's the one I choose.

I am. I definitely want the secret handshake and induction ceremonies and stuff.

DAS IST VERBOTEN! :P

I only voted super private because of the lack of intermediate options, same as a lot of other people. Sure, I want non-backers to get regular updates on what is going on, but there's no need for them to know every little detail of what is happening. Official updates are a lot more effective way of spreading the word and keeping people interested than telling them everything that it takes to make the game (like bugs, changes in design, discussions...). Maybe they didn't back because they don't want to know.

The main reason I wish for things to be kept private for as long as possible is to not have the internet filled with false reports.. Say Tim somewhere mentions that he think it would be nice to make the main character a platypus, and then within a day that being over every gaming news site as "Confirmed: DFA Will Star a Platypus" even though it was just an offhand remark and nothing has been decided.. I know I picked an extreme case, but you get my point I hope..

Reading through the results of that poll, the recurring sentiments seemed to be to 1) keep things as private as possible 2) recognize there will be leaks and there's no real way to enforce privacy outside of personal codes of conduct/ethics/community "policing" 3) keep people on the "outside" in the loop via regular high-level/clear/cohesive updates and 4) people here are, by and large, pretty rad.

As others have said- there were only two options in the poll and most people leaned toward caution. If a "middle ground" option had been presented, I feel a significant number (if not the majority) would've voted for that. I think Tim was simply looking for a clear yes/no leaning.

I've noticed that there are a *lot* of threads/individual responses aimed at backers who don't really seem to exist (yet, at least): backers who demand DF to bend to their slightest whim, backers who want to repress all the insignificant peons who didn't pledge money toward DFA with Extreme Prejudice & Swirlies, backers who use the fact that they pledged more to throw their weight around, etc... If they're here, I honestly haven't seen them. I've spotted subtle shades of possible future melodrama, but nothing too ridiculous/audacious (outside of things I'm fairly certain were meant to be funny). It's possible they're there and I've just missed them.

To the OP- if I come off as abrasive toward you personally, please understand that it's absolutely not my intention. Also, sorry for the longish response! :)

What exactly are you talking about? It's very hard for someone to vote if they don't know what you're referring to.

Eh, you guys know it's gonna leak.. just let it leak.. the only people who will even pay attention are hardcore adventure fans anyways.. there was some talk about a teacher who wanted to use some of the videos in her game dev class too, I think that's really cool and we shouldn't restrict her. Just one mans opinion, but I'm a dirty socialist, believe in healthcare for all and everything. So string me up.

Simple, give outsiders some updates to ease their curiosity, but keep the indepth stuff private for people who paid with their money. We don't want to devalue Kickstarter.

Won't it be great when people from the outside get info from leaks and we will be able to put on our most smug expressions and dismiss what they tell us as 'old news'?

I have to say I found alot of the replies to the main thread to range from irksome to downright disgusting and nasty. The whole mentality that because they have donated they have risen above the "masses" to some sort of elitist VIP party and now want the door padlocked with barbed wire on the fences really grinds me gears.

Ah yes, the throbbing moronic horde of the "masses". We spit upon them just to remove the excess bile from our mouths at the very thought of their unwashed hands touching our cloaks. $30 sets you/us apart from "them"! I get some of us spent more, but it's just a really stereotypical example of implied (meaningless) societal heirarcy bringing out the worst in people.

Sigh. Apologies, that was a rant. Sorry in particular to Infocow, for my not-nice tone. Please don't make it look like I am a paedophile.

Eghh, I am a student and paid my dad's hard-earned euros for this game and more importantly exclusive access to elitist information. I demand the most privileged treatment and am willing to spit on the filthy masses anytime! That being said, I'm all for leaking small bits of (week-old) news now and then, just to make them feel as underprivileged as they should. Why is that not an option?

As I also said though, I think people should be wary of loose lips simply because alot of people don't WANT to be spoiled.

I think with 90,000 (is that right?) possible leaks, that the majority of people will be aware of what the game is and some key details before it releases. Some of the backers must assumedly be game journalists as well.

There will no doubt be an atmosphere of leaks being "frowned upon", possibly even some cases of boycotting and exile amongst the more extreme of us, I doubt there will have to be any legal actions taking. I hope not anyway!

I think you're probably right and, for what it's worth, you are neither abrasive or long-winded.

Eek! I totally forgot they don't wash their hands! Poll redacted - privacy wins!

Hell yeah I'll talk to people I trust about it, like my brother. But I'm not gonna go blabbing to everyone just for a conversation.

Every single NDA I have ever signed has pretty much worked on the honor system. The few devs that I have worked with (or around, or otherwise engaged with) had said the same thing... "don't have us waste the valuable time chasing you. Let us work on the game, please." I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

I have voted for the private forums, and this is my personal stance. At the end of the day, it is up to DFA to decide what they want, and whatever the course of action may be, I will respect their wishes.

Now we're having a poll about another poll?

It feels like this part of the board has become a "who-makes-the-funniest-thread-and-gets-noticed-by-DF-staff-members-competition". There is already a thread for this discussion and it certainly doesn't need another poll.

Just my 2 cents.

Of course not. I think we're all just waiting for DFA's first big video update, and when that happens, all those threads will go away.

I say we try to keep it private for now, at least until the full dvd comes out. Id bet my foot there's gonna be a seeded torrent of the thing out there within a week of it getting into our hands. Lets just try to enjoy the show while we can. Its not just hardcore adventure fans posting on this forum or backing this project, some of us are new to the genre or haven't played an adventure game in years. This game is probably introducing a whole new audience to the genre anyway.

I don't think it's really realistic... but that being said I intend to keep it private aside from any information that is something you would learn from an advertisement for the game. I would appreciate a similar level of privacy from everyone but I can't say I expect it.

The poll was, and I can't stress this enough, just a bit of fun. And, yes, you got me... the log WAS a Twin Peaks reference.

Not going as far as to say I won't tell people a few things or at least be able to. But I don't want to leak stuff or have it be leaked. I mean it probably will happen, we DO have 80'000 people or something. Let's just hope for the best.
