Writing Update #3: Let's brainstorm Locations together!

Recommended Posts

I remembered about how there would be two different perspectives to work with and had an idea.

You have these two people in two different worlds that find something somewhere that links them together. Not the worlds but the characters.

Then some world changing event happens that affects both worlds with the same end results.

Then they meet somehow.

It could be that they were on two different parts of the same world and it's a global change.

Or they could be on different worlds and the event teleports everything to the same new place.

I've just realized how this is supposed to be about level ideas...

oops.

Things got convoluted but I think my original idea was to have two places as polar opposites to each other and something happens to level things out and combine everything into some place new.

Like Fire and Ice making Steam or something.

Or more like Fire and Ice 'become' Steam.

Or just something else.

-A world of product placement where all the products are not real

-Eastern spirit world full of wonder and strange, bizarre beings speaking in weird ways

-A pixelated world!

-A mass murderers convention

-A dream inside a dream inside a dream where every time you say the wrong thing, you wake up

-A poker house where the players are hedgehogs

-A world made of breakfast cereals

-Titan, like described by Arthur Clarke in the 2001 series (ice world with sloooow inhabitants)

- I like Mirror-/Bizarro World style Locations. Good is Bad, Bad is Good, cats chasing dogs, everyone has a goatee (It's Scifi law!) ...

- Supervillian's Lair inside a Volcano ... or a moon base... or underwater! (a hidden underwater, volcano lair on the moon perhaps?) Stupid/incapable Henchmen included ofcourse.

- Some kind of Convention like E3 or ComicCon. (I love nerds in Costumes, sue me....)

- Inception! A dream within a dream within a dream within a dream of our protagonist .... hillarity ensues!

- inside Jay Leno's toupee factory

- at Gun's 'n' Roses' Axl Rose's rehab

- have a beer with a cockroach (i know it's not really a location but that'd be fun)

Hmm... I can imagine this part is a difficult one, as there have been quite a few different types of media around for a long time, using up locations and making them cliche'. Here's a few of mine that I thought up.

-An American old west town, where everyone speaks Latin pig-latin (with english subtitles of course)... or hey, maybe Chinese pig-latin.. something kinda off the wall. Not sure how that last one would work though.

-The Bible-Belt South with Dinosaurs rather than people.

-An academic debate between a Dinosaur and a Dragon, with each saying the other is just a derivative with long winded and nonsensical reasons. Or perhaps, as a more generic location... cause I suppose that's more than just location... how about just a debate house where each room is a different set of real and "fantasy" animals debating how they are "the truest and most perfect" and the other is "sorely derivative".

-the "Fantastic Voyage" through a tree... i.e. the very long tunnel of xylem and phloem.

-Cactus barmitzfa in Antarctica with gerbal yamikas (forgive me if I brutalize the spelling, not intentional I swear)

-Hall of the Last Twinkie

-The International Museum Sensationalizing Copious Hereditary Armaments For Evolving Roombas

-A series of tubes (the internet)

-An Ice level... in an active volcano... possibly involving massive air-conditioners... with fire penguins and snow giraffes

-A shoreline composed of clams, at the edge of a deep sea lake (watch discovery channel, its an actual thing)

-Time travel back to the beginning credits (like the level is you behind the scenes of all the stuff that's going on before the game even started, possibly changing something drastic... like accidentally killing yourself before the game started, or messing up some part of the intro that will impact the game when you get back)

- Jellyfish pokergame

-A cooking show mixed with Cops, where people are actually arrested because they were cooking under the influence of paprika or something crazy like that.

... or alternately

Mary-Jew and Anna's Baking show

-Origami Salami Swami Party

-Inside Death's tuppe'

....aaand that's all I can think of right now.

Inside an ant farm.

The dark side of the moon. But the moon is made of cheese, and the dark side is inhabited by massive intelligent bipedal rodents.

A twinkie factory. (What really goes INTO those things?!)

Leonardos workshop, as a ghost. (Somehow you end up being responsible for his greatest inventions)

That's a lot of factories. Over 60 of them to my reckoning. Only five-ish pages didn't have suggestions of some kind of factory.

What about a factory that looks like any other from the front and the first few rooms, but go deeper in and you discover that the building is constructed around the head of a giant creature or being who is stuck on or in the ground, and whose head has a hole with a conveyor belt in it. As long as this being is kept in a hypnotic state, he\she\it can visualize the desired object which will instantly and repeatedly materialize and come out along the conveyor belt. The sole job of the factory workers is to maintain the beings hypnotic and sedated state to keep the stock flowing.

When you said "go deeper", it made me think of Inception.

/Insert much cleverer than I can muster Inception based environment gag

- A girl's uterus during her menstrual cycle, moving and undulating all about

- Melting clocks in a Salvador Dali painting

- Underwater of a swampy pond upside down with the floor of the pond as the ceiling with nebulous clusters of long vegetation, seaweeds in one area, long lillies in another, a mountainous mass of translucent but cloudy fish eggs as if you yourself were shrunken down to the size of a nymph.

- A long winding colon full of polyp lumps and "debris" during a colonoscopy

- A field of rolling cotton candy hills, streets paved in licorice twists, with a number of rough spherical candy (NERDS) gravel roads branching from it, tall and wide taffy suspension bridges spanning over rivers of red bubblegum flavored soda (Big Red), one major street lined with wafer cookies carved into statues leading into town. I'm getting hungry and a toothache imagining this so I need to stop...

- A cavern of wax, many stalagmites, stalagtites, all oozing and dripping of slow flowing warm wax... Gotta watch your step and any heat sources, solid can turn to liquid relatively quickly. Color of the wax cavern changes from one area to the next... a white wax waterfall...waxfall?

- An intergalactic wormhole tunnel, where stars and planetary bodies have been sucked in and trapped, careening to their next destination (or end?) and being able to hop from one celestial body to the next, since everything in the wormhole seems so condensed and compressed. And being inside a wormhole, laws of physics are entirely out the window... one foot on a star, the other on a comet, holding a planet, head stuck in a nebula... I'm a galactic traveler bitches!

I work down the street from the old TWA building in KC mo. It still has the rocket model on top.

I always imagine going up there and finding secret rocket plans hidden in that rocket, or that its a real working rocket.

- A slowly falling floating snowflake island.

The landscape is a massive pattern of interconnecting ice fronds, acting as land bridges from one plaza + building to the next. These land bridges are multi-level. Standing over the edge, as you look down, you can see a vast network of platforms criss-crossing everywhere, ice ramps leading up to the level you're on as well as the level above you. The structures dotting the large plaza areas of these ice fronds are constructed entirely of glistening crystalline geometric lattices, with icicle spires darting towards the heavens. This whole world is an elegant yet delicately fragile piece of ice, right at the temperature point where water turns to ice. And as such, pools and ponds of water pepper the various areas of which the inhabitants of this world have sculptured fountains and reflecting pools from them. This borderline freezing point also brings about some dangers to this world, stirring up any of the bodies of water can cause a cascading effect of it turning violently into jagged growing ice that can crack the structures and land ice and any undue weight or friction concentrated into one area can cause it to melt or snap. Another element is the Sun, it's what's keeping the environment on the edge of water and ice. Every piece of thin ice can concentrate or dissipate this sunlight as well as it's reflections. This world is floating down, but down to where?

1.the web: you are walking through different sites like ebay, google-startpage which is veeery empty, FBI-Homepage (there are much guns and rockets), df-homepage (Tim is throwing love-bombs at you), etc. Every hompage-section has his own style depending to the real websites. E.g. at ebay there are many products in background and on facebook a tiny zuckerberg is chasing you and aks many question about your life; or you 'll be chased by the gouvernment as spider-camera-monster.

2. fire-ice-forrest-level

3. kepler 22b: alien-aqua-level

hmm... looks like most people are casting their votes in the general direction of " things inside other things"

so i'm gonna go with an order of inside DoubleFine's inside backer forums

with a side of spiderwebs at the source (that's inside Spider butt.) I won't be playing that level.

then washing my hands of the whole ordeal by flooding the booming civilization of crumbs growing on my palms

not unrelated- has any one ever wondered what it feels like to be the plastic wrap on a highly anticipated hard-copy of a game?

bonus points if you answered this in a previous forum before i asked.

I love it when in an adventure game something meant as a symbol is actually very obviously real and functional - the question is how to get it working.

Of course the arrow and wing logos on engineering buildings that can be used for your selfmade weaponry and aircraft, and the J in "Johnson's Fish Food" that you can use as a hook.

I hope DFA is going to be full of this!

Salvadore Dali suggestion above is great.

This could be stretched to a whole series of famous paintings in a museum, which appear to be physically connected when you walk in

Here's my suggestions!

* A biodynamic light bulb plantation would be nice. Of course it's pretty hard to pick the bulbs directly from the trees, as they get pretty hot.

* A straight maze. Well, it's more like passage.

* Inside a watch.
