Kinect Party Photo "Share" - HOW?!?

Recommended Posts

So the game tells you to "share" your photos because they won't get saved otherwise, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. Is it a functionality that isn't implemented yet?

Thanks!

-Jared

Hi Jared - Are you logged in to XBOX live? The share features will only show up if you're online. In that case any time a picture gets taken, you'll see a "Press X to share" notification in the corner of the screen. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question!

I'm logged into Xbox live, and I've tried switching to a couple different accounts I have on this system to no avail. This is on my office XBox where the main account holder only has Xbox live silver. I tried logging into my personal account, which has Xbox Live gold, and that didn't make any difference. What's odd, is that on my home console where the Gold account is the primary account, I was seeing the "SHARE" option but didn't get a chance to try it this morning before coming to work.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks Drew!

When viewing a photo, the word "Share" will appear at the top of the screen for you to select. It's kind of easy to miss :) You can also say "Share With Friends" after taking a photo during the game.

Nope, those prompts don't show up for me. :-S

Hey AchillesPDX - this is an interesting problem we haven't run into before. Let me see if I can dig up any more info for you and then I'll post back. It definitely sounds like it's related to your office network settings, but i'm not aware of any specifics settings that could cause that.

Does photo sharing require Gold, or does it work with Silver? Also, please let me know if there's any other information I can provide that might help troubleshoot.

Thanks!

It definitely works with Silver (I double checked that on my own account last night). I've talked to the networking specialist here at Double Fine and he says that the Facebook sharing service must not be getting recognized on your office network. Do you have another XBOX that you could try out on the office network? That would give us a little more information. Alternatively, if you're able to try sharing pictures with that XBOX on a different network, it would also give us some more info.

Sorry for not having a simpler solution for you - this is a strange problem!

Drew, I just tried it again with my Gold account on my office XBox, and got the share functionality to show up, but it wound up erroring out when actually trying to post to Facebook. I haven't had a chance to try it again with the office's Silver account, but that leads me to my next question:

How do I check my Facebook integration settings? There used to be a Facebook app on the Xbox, but they've removed it and I can't for the life of me figure out how to set up Facebook integration now.

Also, why aren't you guys using the kinectshare.com functionality from Microsoft instead of Facebook?

Thanks again,

Jared

Hey @AchillesPDX - I've been in touch with Microsoft and, intriguingly, the last thing they told me is they've made some changes on their servers which could improve the facebook experience for Kinect Party players. I've asked them for more details but right now that's all I know. It's possible that it may make things more reliable when working from your office?

Unfortunately I also can't tell you where those facebook integration settings are. I believe they may be entirely hidden from users - the documentation on that is terrible since they removed the app. Internally, we simply call microsoft's facebook API and that pops up the user login/password.

Finally the reason we avoided kinectshare.com was because we really wanted something that would be extremely streamlined for photo sharing and would be useful for as many people as possible. The larger facebook user base and simplified photo sharing functionality led us to use that platform. We realize it's not everybody's first choice and apologize for not being able to provide more options - that is high on the list of new features we'd want to add if we have an opportunity to do more though! (I really, really wanted to add animated gif sharing via twitter, for example!)

Woah - seriously!?!? AWESOME thanks for posting back. I'll let them know that the magical lever they pulled was the right one! :D

It doesn't show up if you don't have a facebook account associated with your xbox live gamertag, because for some reason this game doesn't let you just use kinectshare like everything else, so I had to make a dummy facebook account, share to that, then download the images and re-share them elsewhere from that.

You wanted to support as many people as possible, so you used something that requires an external account rather than the one that uses the same login. That is the stupidest thing I've heard all day, and I'm comparing to things like "gay marriage might force Jesus to marry a man when he returns!"

Sorry that you're disappointed about the lack of kinectshare.com support Keiya. There's not much we can do to address that right now - however the issue you've identified with facebook sharing seems like a problem that we should be able to fix.

Can you explain in a little more detail about what you're running into? In particular - i'm confused about what behavior you saw in the game before you had to create the dummy facebook account. Did you get a specific error message when you tried to share on facebook from the game?

Thanks Keiya - hopefully we can get this sorted!

The behavior I saw was no error message, it was no message period. The 'press x or say whatever to share' prompt didn't show up until I connected to the dummy facebook account. Honestly, that's probably correct behavior.

I was still able to share from the main menu. It prompted me for login info (and thankfully smartglass worked, typing with a controller is a pain!)

Hahahahah - FANTASTIC!!! Now there's proof if I've ever seen it :)

Apparently I spoke too soon, Drew. My personal Gold account works perfectly and that's what you saw a picture from earlier. My office Silver account however is unable to connect to Facebook after typing in the login information. It reports back with:

Sharing on Facebook

Sorry, there was a problem connecting your account or sharing to Facebook. Try again later.

Status code: 0x838107D2

Not sure if that's helpful at all, but it'd be great to get this solved.

Thanks!

Thanks for the additional detail! I'm still trying to sort through exactly what's happening here. How exactly did you go about connecting to the dummy facebook account? Did you do that from inside Kinect Party, or from the XBOX dashboard?

I'm confused because the "Press X to share" prompt should show up whenever the xbox is connected to the network, regardless of whether your profile is associated with an existing facebook account or no facebook account at all. I think we're getting close to isolating this though!

@AchillesPDX - ahh bummer things are still broken. Thanks for the error code though - I've sent it to microsoft support. Something fishy is definitely going on here...

I did it through Party. It's entirely possible I'm just really dense, but it didn't seem like it showed up...

It definitely won't show up if there's a problem with the xbox network connection or if your profile isn't logged into xbox live - I wonder if somehow in the process of getting the dummy facebook account to work you were automatically logged in and then it started showing up? I agree it sounds like something confusing was happening though - let me know if you have any other info and we can keep digging into it. Cheers!
