Windows 7 Pro

The Cave

Every time I try to start The Cave I briefly see the cursor for the game, then black screens flash, and then I get a notification from windows 7 that says the following:

Cave.exe has stopped working

I've updated my graphics card, manually applied the redistributes, verified local game cache, restarted my computer, everything that the FAQs suggests and still nothing fixes this issue.

Here is an error in the event log:

I had two crashes so far using Windows 7 64 Bit. Lost my progress both times... it´s rather anoing even if i enjoy the game otherwise. I forgot the reason the first time it crashed, the second time it was when i blew up dynamite in the castle.

That is super strange. I can't get much out of that crash info but we'll look at the mini dump logs on Steam. What graphics card are you using? Do you have any less common peripherals plugged in like a wacom tablet or a digitizer or anything unusual that we might night have tested with?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am working straight of my Dell XPS 15 inch laptop with only the A/C adapter attached. The graphics card is Nvidia Geforce GT 640M.

That's pretty crazy. That machine should be totally fine. Can you double check your power settings for me? Make sure they didn't get set to throttle your GPU (which should be plenty powerful) when the laptop is plugged in.

Also, some laptops have two GPUs (one integrated and one custom). Those systems sometimes let you chose which GPU will be used for a given program. If you have options like that (usually in the graphics drivers) then make sure The Cave is set to run on that GT 640M.

I put my power settings on high performance and still the same thing. I've also already tried setting both graphics cards.

Also, to note, every time I try running the game I get the windows UAC asking if I want to allow Steam Client Service to make changes, and every other time I try to run the game I get a steam popup saying "Installing Microsoft VC Redist Packages"

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been eager to try this game since it was announced.

Again, thanks for the excellent response time

So odd! Are you comfortable disabling UAC entirely and then running The Cave? Also, can you try terminating any other non-essential background processes like AV, Dell "support" programs, etc?

I've disabled UAC, no problem. Same issue. I terminated all non-essential processes and still the same thing.

The steam popup I mentioned also says performing first time setup, which is weird. I've just deleted my local cache and i am going to restart and install it again.

I, too, am experiencing the same thing running Vista. Game is loading when I get the Cave.exe has stopped working error message.

After removing local cache, restarting, and reinstalling The Cave, I still had the same issue.

I also took someone else's suggestion to start steam as administrator... that did not work.

So I noticed there are three other events that happen in the Event Manager every time The Cave fails to load. These were showing up as informational, not errors.

Bummer. We have folks looking into this specific issue, but no traction so far. However, we have a new patch coming out that should fix a few issues, so please try the game again tomorrow sometime and let us know if it fixed your issues!

Any new updates coming? I am dying to play this, and if it doesn't work I want to figure out how to return it and get it on Xbox or something.

I sent this in a PM to Nathan last night.

==============

Still crashing, but slightly differently. This time it says the steam popup real briefly, but it only says setting up for the first time, it does not say anything about installing windows vc. Then you see the cursor for the game, and then the error message. The real difference is that I still have the cursor when I am hovering over anywhere but the task bar or the error popup. Before it was the regular windows cursor.

I’ve uninstalled again and downloaded from scratch after a restart and stilll nothing..

I also tried the screen.dat, same problem... the only difference I can get is when I do full screen= false...then everything goes white instead of black...same results otherwise.

I had some trouble installing the Sim City beta as well. I decided to reinstall the OS (something I like to do every once in awhile to clean things up). The first thing I installed was Steam and this game.. Low and behold, it worked.

Sorry if I wasted anyone's time. I will keep checking the game as I install more software to see if anything specific "breaks" it.

Thanks for all your support Justin and Nathan (and team behind them).

I have a Dell XPS15 and am having the same issue as the other guy (windows error "the cave has stopped working"). Which is really too bad, looks like there may be an issue on this hardware? I bought the game on steam.

I've verified the integrity of the cache, downloaded the latest video card drivers, re downloaded dx9c and can't think of what else to do. This is the first time I've tried running the game.

I have no dump file for the error since it's windows that kills it. For some other games I've had to run them in windowed mode, is there a launch option for this? (I think it has to do with the relatively high resolution native setting for this screen)

I've got a Nvidia 640m which has 2GB dedicated VRAM so that shouldn't be an issue. Please let me know what I can do. reinstalling my OS isn't really realistic for me to get to play one game.

Please let me know what logs you'd like me to post and I'll do so. If there is no fix, can I trade for a download of Xbox Live Arcade or PS3 version of the game? It's not what I wanted, but better than nothing.

Thanks,

Casey

Caseyii, I tracked the issue down to the DisplayLink drivers that power my Targus docking station. Once I installed these (off the CD that came with the dock) I started getting the same issue. It would happen even when I wasn't connected to the dock.

I removed the drivers, all was well. I downloaded the latest drivers off their website (http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php) and installed those, and it still works fine. I was able to finish (well, play enough to see all the characters levels) and enjoyed the game.

If you don't have the Targus docking station, I'd look at other drivers you may have installed as well.

Hope this helps.

Good call, thanks so much, I have a Toshiba Dynadock 3.0 and it uses displayport drivers too. Thanks so much for the help, downloading the new drivers now.

Funny, I thought it was an issue because we both had the same laptop. Thank you so much for following up on the post.

Best,

Casey
