Psychonauts Patch - Linux and Mac Update

Recommended Posts

Which platform are you playing the game on? There was an update to the Linux version on Steam last year which included fixes for the projection bug, but I'm not sure if that was in time for it to make the mastering for The Adventure Company's DVD version.

If that update hasn't made it to other online platforms, I can give a nudge and see what the story is.

Other than the DVD version, I got the game from the Humble Double Fine Bundle (Brütal Legend, Costume Quest, Psychonauts and Stacking) if that's what you mean. The Linux version of Psychonauts was updated on May 7 2013, and the other games were updated on June 16 the same year.

(The Windows version of Psychonauts is from June 5 2012. The other games don't appear updated at all, though I've found that the Humble Library page isn't always completely reliable about that. The Mac games were all updated on September 13 2013.)

Cheers. I'll see if I can't convince somebody to look at updating the Humble builds :)

That would be great. Thanks!

Of course, now that I've played through the game it will probably be quite a while before I do it again since there are so many other games in my "that looks interesting" pile that I haven't gotten to yet. Some of them are from the 80's, so I really should get around to them. Any year now. :-)

Any update on this? The build on the Humble Store is still from 2013. I can't actually get this to run on Ubuntu Vivid. (I can get the installer to work, but the game will not run.).

The Ubuntu store build only supports 13.10 and nothing later. Vivid is 15.04.

Hey I've run across a decent graphical bug on OSX during my playthroughs - it occurs due to the game seemingly remembering the last resolution it was played at. How is that a problem??!??! i hear you think - well one day I launched up the game on an external monitor after a previous session on my macbook pro (at full retina resolution) and was only seeing about the top left quarter of the screen! I couldn't figure it what to do but eventually found a workaround which was to edit the config file each time I launched the game, resetting the resolution to something smaller that would launch fully visible, then I would change to the desired resolution for the external monitor using the in-game menu.

I take it that there has been no progress on this in the past two years? I did try asking Double Fine support as well, but it's been 2.5 months since they promised to get back to me "as soon as possible".

Hmm, I thought we got this sorted. Not sure what happened. I'll nudge some people again.

It's possible that it was updated on GOG, because there are two threads on their forum mentioning a Linux update. Though according to the second one, the projector bug still remains. I can't verify this, because I do not own the GOG version. (Edit: Looking at it again, I see that this update was made before I submitted my bug report. Though that bug has been well known for years now...)

The one in my Humble Library still says 05/07/2013, and had the bug last time I checked.

If there is an update for the DVD release, I don't know where to look for it.

Still no reply from Double Fine support, other than the "we'll get back to you as soon as possible!" mail I got on April 28.

Clarified that the GOG update was older than my bug report.

I can't tell you much other than that it's continuing to be discussed. Sorry that it's taking so long to get to the bottom of this.

Hey folks!

We're checking this out.

Steam - Outta be up to date!

Humble Bundle/GOG - We're tracking down the missing updates.

DVD - We're not planning to provide a patch for this version. Unfortunately the logistics of providing an update are beyond what we can muster right now.

Yes, I believe the Steam version is the one that works the best at the moment. I played through it some time ago, and the projector definitely worked. I also seem to recall having occasional audio problems with the Humble Bundle version that I don't remember having with the Steam version. Outdated libraries, perhaps?

I did get occasional graphics glitches with the Steam version, usually around water, but I can probably blame those on the then slightly dodgy graphics driver. It's improved a lot since then.

Shame about the DVD version. Ah well, it still looks nice on my shelf.

Anyway, thanks for looking into it.

Mac: Mac is the platform that will have the most focus in upcoming patches. The audio issues were the main focus for this patch, and as far as I tested were fixed. Unfortunately, a majority of the graphical issues are still in the game. The next patch will focus on these graphical issues primarily.

Have these mac graphics issues ever been fixed?

I just got Psychonauts for Mac on Humble Bundle too and the first level gameplay starts flickering black with white spots/stars when I move the camera around. It looks like the version on Humble Bundle that I downloaded was 1.0.2. Unfortunately I can't run Steam on this old laptop so is there anyone other place I can download a standalone patch for the latest Mac version?

Thanks in advance!

I've had Psychonauts on Mac for some time, but for the past 9 or 10 months it seems, the game fails to launch. I've done just about everything to try and fix this by now. I've reinstalled, verified cache, asked the Community Hub, contacted DF Support via email... twice, but so far nothing doing. So I figure this is my best option for finding a fix. I'm not having a crashing issue with any other Steam games.

Do you have a crash log that might shed some light on the problem? I don't think anyone at Double Fine will be able to look into it in the near future, with the holidays coming up and all, but maybe it's possible to figure out a workaround. Your system specs might be helpful too.

Specs:

OS: Macbook Pro (Yosemite)

Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memeory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB

I did find the crash log but it's quite lengthy, and I'm unsure which section specifically needs to be looked into.

I'm not sure either, but you could perhaps upload the full log to GitHub Gist or hastebin

Will that make finding the issue more convenient, though? It's quite the textwall. I don't know if there's a specific section of it I should be looking at.

For a developer who knows what to look for, it's better to get too much information, rather than too little, and risk omitting the relevant part of the logs.
