No way back in Scientist's Silo?

Recommended Posts

I've got all my characters past the laser without hacking it to kill the scientist working at the terminal, which I now realise (from a walk-through) I should have done to get a key. So now I can't go back without getting zapped by the laser. I can get through to the HCAV control switch but that doesn't seem to help.

Is this a bug? Is there a way out or do I have to start all over again?

What other characters do you have? If you have the knight, maybe he could distract the laser long enough (with his special ability) to get the scientist back to the console?

I have the knight and monk. Tried what you suggested (thanks for that) but couldn't get it to work. The knight can't operate his special power while moving and as soon as he moves beneath the laser it zaps him. I did get the scientist to the console while the laser was in its left most position, but this does not seem to give enough time for a successful hack.

Yeah, the scientist only has enough time once the laser starts moving back to the start position. I don't remember if the person operating the laser has a gas mask or not; you could get the gas and try to knock him out. Otherwise, you may be out of luck and will have to start over. :(

The person operating the laser has something green strapped to his head (presumably a gas mask), but can't tell for sure because his back is turned. But how do you get the gas? I'm assuming I need to go down in the lift to get it and the lift button doesn't work. (Lift = elevator if you are in the US!)

I guess I got confused as to where you were located. Never mind. You'll have to restart, unless you know a way to hack the save file - they're mostly regular text, but there a few wonky characters that may make them unusable if you use a regular text editor.

I don't even know where the save file is, let alone how to hack it. Best start again I suppose. So this IS a bug. I see there is a long bugs thread here. Is that the best place to report it?

Thanks for your help with this.

Probably the best place is that bug thread. Be sure to give the exact sequence that got you stuck. BTW, the save files in Windows are under %appdata% (well that's the shortcut you type into Windows Explorer). There's a DoubleFine folder there. In a Linux distro, it's under .local/share/DoubleFine under your user folder. I'm not sure where it would be on MacOSX, but I'm sure it's something similar.

Thanks - I've reported it on the Bugs thread.

I'm on a Mac, playing through Steam. Save files seem to be in Library / Application Support / Doublefine / TheCave. There is one called auto.sav, which is presumably the file to hack, but it is a long stream of stuff. Any idea what to look for to edit? Worth a go I suppose before I go right back to the beginning!

It's pretty easy to get back through the game once you know the puzzles and some of the shortcuts (bring a hot dog (or the Monk) to the zoo! Cuts out pretty much the whole area).
