After more than a decade of serving this community well, these forums have finally run their course and it's time to close them down. That doesn't mean we want to close the doors on our community, quite the opposite!
Our discord server grows ever busier by the day, and we encourage all Double Fine fans to meet us over there www.discord.gg/doublefine In a short time these forums will become a read only archive and will remain that way until they become needed again.
You never know, it might happen.  There is... a prophecy. Thank you all for being part of these forums, and remember that the fun is definitely not over - so please join us on Discord! Love ya, Spaff, Tim, Info Cow, and all of Double Fine.

DF Game Club: The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief: Chapter 1 (plus devchat with Marco Rosenberg!)

DOUBLE FINE GAME CLUB: The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief: Chapter 1 (plus devchat with Marco Rosenberg!) (starting 21st of September)

The Double Fine Game Club is a community run weekly event where interested gamers play through and come together to discuss what they do and don't like about a particular game (sort of like a book club, but for games). We usually aim to play one or two hours a week, and we normally have somebody streaming the current game so that those who don't have the game or don't feel like playing it again can still feel involved.

Discussion takes place here in the forums and on the Double Fine Game Club home page. Game Club is a very informal weekly chat, and everyone is welcome!

Previous game: Gretel and Hansel

Next Game: Costume Quest

Hi all! I'm the one doing the stream for the Raven. It's the first time I'll be using my new pc (gtx 770, 4770k, 16gb of ram, etc) for a double fine stream, so I'm looking forward to showing off how beautiful the game looks.

I've only been able to spend an hour or so with it so far and I'm very impressed with the production values.

Whoops, internet cut out after the stream ended so I missed the giveaway :( Oh well, it's a great looking game!

Game was really good! I can't wait to dive in on it myself. As many people pointed out, the score was absolutely amazing in this game, and set the mood and feel quite well. I'm sure I'll have a more developed critique of it once I start in myself (and am not so distracted by the great questions and their answers from Marco), but so far I'm hooked.

Unfortunately, due to some policy changes at Twitch, the previous session's stream archive has been lost. However, future sessions should be properly archived.

Thank you very much for the giveaway! I played through chapters 1 and 2 (took about 6 and 4 hours respectively) and totally loved it. The plot, the voice acting, the music, the visuals are all great. The difficulty isn’t too high but feels appropriate for this kind of a game. There have been some slight bugs (mostly graphics glitches, some missing sounds in cutscenes, and you can give an item to someone twice (which affects nothing)), but nothing game-breaking. I can’t wait for the final chapter.

Chapter 3 was released last night! :D

I had been holding off for the stream archive to mention it, but a log from the dev chat with Marco Rosenberg is up in the first post now for anybody who missed it.

Looks like The Raven is 20% off on Steam and GOG at the moment (store links are in the first post).

I finished part 3 last night. Great game all round. A few interesting pathfinding issues and slightly crazy facial animations, but other than that it's hard to find anything critical to say about it. Looking forward to doing a review thingy of part 1 :)

The stream archive and chat log from today's session are up!

What a suspenseful end to the first chapter!

We're going to take a break from The Raven and come back to the second episode in the future. Starting the 12th, we'll be diving into our second Double Fine game, Costume Quest!

In the meantime, it'd be great to hear what people thought of episode 1 of The Raven!

Here are my thoughts in rating form (template thingy can be found here):

Story: 10 (Lots of effort has been put into giving each character a believable motivation - a key component for a "whodunnit", and something which enriches this game's ample atmosphere. Pacing is solid and engaging.)

Usability: 7 (Camera change/scene exit points are not clearly communicated, making discovering offcamera areas a little difficult in places. Some minor pathfinding bugs complicate item interaction from time to time.)

Gameplay: 9 (King Art touted believable real-world puzzles as being a feature of this game, and for the most part they pull it off. Several less conventional puzzles/minigames provide nice relief - in particular the lockpick puzzle and forensics kit stands out as a justifiable, and unique elements.)

Assets: 9 (Voice acting is solid. Environments are gorgeous, and the character models are detailed and full of charm. Character and item animations however stand out as not being quite as polished as the rest of the game, with visible clipping being common, foot sliding with many idle animations and lip sync animations moving slightly into uncanny valley territory - that isn't to say that they're expressly bad, just that they seem out of place with the production values evident in the other areas of the game)

Impact: 9 (Cliffhanger end to the first part is exciting, and the growing threads of potentially related mystery are compelling.)

Overall: 44

Completed: Yes
