DF Game Club: Kentucky Route Zero: Act II (plus dev chat with Jake Elliott)

DOUBLE FINE GAME CLUB: Kentucky Route Zero: Act II (starting 7th of December)

The Double Fine Game Club is a community run weekly event where interested gamers play through and come together to discuss what they do and don't like about a particular game (sort of like a book club, but for games). We usually aim to play one or two hours a week, and we normally have somebody streaming the current game so that those who don't have the game or don't feel like playing it again can still feel involved.

Discussion takes place here in the forums and on the Double Fine Game Club home page. Game Club is a very informal weekly chat, and everyone is welcome!

Previous game: Gone Home

Next Game: Costume Quest: Grubbins On Ice

ABOUT THE GAME

Kentucky Route Zero is a magical realist adventure game about a secret highway in the caves beneath Kentucky, and the mysterious folks who travel it. Gameplay is inspired by point-and-click adventure games, but focused on characterization, atmosphere and storytelling rather than clever puzzles or challenges of skill.

KR0 is 25% off on Steam right now, and might get even cheaper if it becomes a daily or flash deal, so if you want to catch up, it'd be a good opportunity to grab a copy of the game.

Oh, and it looks like it's currently half price on the Humble Store (US$12.49).

Both Steam and the Humble Store (and the KR0 website) all give you the current two parts (acts) of the game as well as the future acts as they get released.

We got confirmation from Jake Elliott earlier today that he'll be able to join us again for the second session!

First session's finished! Next week, we'll explore some of the surface highway, then head over to the museum to look for Dr. Truman.

The stream archive and chat log from today's session are up!

Next week, we'll be playing Grubbins on Ice, the Costume Quest DLC!

Here are my thoughts in rating form, updated from Act 1 (template thingy can be found here):

Story: 10 (Super surreal atmosphere is well maintained. New characters bring interesting dynamics (I particularly like Ezra and Julian))

Usability: 9 (Navigation seems a little improved from Act 1, but that may be to do with the camera angles used more than anything)

Gameplay: 9 (Good continuation of what worked in the first act. Definitely loved the more "ritualistic" driving mechanic of navigaing the Zero)

Assets: 10 (Fewer locations in this act, but those that are there are outstanding. In particular, the forest's confusion of positive and negative space is amazing)

Impact: 10 (Still indescribably mind blowing)

Overall: 48

Completed: Yes

What did everybody else think?

I slept through the stream again... *throws hands in the air*

Was really looking forward to this one too. Oh well, to the archive I go. Also, I would do the rating thingy but I haven't had the time to finish Act 2 myself, so until then I'll remember to actually go to bed early and not 2 hours before the session again.
